The United States soccer team demonstrated resilience in the World Cup, advancing to the knockout round without their injured star Christian Pulisic. The team secured a 2-0 victory over Australia, marking their second consecutive win in the expanded 48-team tournament.
U.S. forward Folarin Balogun, who played a key role with two goals in an earlier 4-1 victory over Paraguay, expressed confidence in the team’s capability to perform well despite Pulisic’s absence. Balogun stated, “We didn’t have him today, but I think you saw we’re still capable to go out there and get a result and put up a performance.”
As winners of Group D, the U.S. is set to play a round-of-32 match on July 1 in Santa Clara, California, against a third-place group finisher. Pulisic, who boasts 33 goals over 87 international appearances and plays for AC Milan, missed the match due to a calf injury. His absence could have posed a challenge for earlier American World Cup teams, yet significant progress has been evident since the last U.S. hosted World Cup in 1994.
Historically, the U.S. team advanced as one of the best third-place teams during the 1994 World Cup, eventually losing to champions Brazil. Now, for the first time since 1930, the American team has achieved consecutive World Cup victories. They have scored six goals, nearing their record in the tournament, with widespread contributions from their roster.
Young player Alex Freeman, aged 21 and the son of former NFL star Antonio Freeman, secured the second goal against Australia in the 43rd minute. He executed a header from a deflected shot by Sergiño Dest, marking his first career World Cup goal. Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised Freeman, “The evolution is massive. He’s so humble. He wants to learn. He always listens. He’s a player that you really enjoy being with him.”
Balogun initiated the scoring in the 11th minute, sending a pass aimed at Ricardo Pepi, who was subbing Pulisic. The pass resulted in an own-goal from Australia’s Cameron Burgess. Reflecting on the play, Balogun stated, “I want to be dangerous, I want to create opportunities. It might not always be myself that scores, but if I can force an error that gives us the lead, then for me it’s like a goal as well.”
Despite the lack of second-half goals, their dominant first-half performance impressed Australia’s coach Tony Popovic. He acknowledged the U.S. team’s quality, athleticism, and power. Expectations around the team continue to grow, yet coach Pochettino remains focused on maintaining belief and striving for strong performances.
Alex Freeman echoed this sentiment, highlighting the team’s depth, “We know how vital Christian is to the team and how much he can contribute in the game. For us it was, we have Ricardo Pepi, who came in and had an amazing game.”
This victory underscores the U.S. team’s ability to navigate the group stage successfully without their star forward and affirms their potential to advance further in the tournament.
