Toy Story 5: A New Chapter with Technology at its Core

4 days ago 0

The trailer for Disney-Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’ has been released, featuring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Greta Lee, and Conan O’Brien. The movie is set to hit theaters on June 19.

In this installment, Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the Pixar favorites confront a new challenge: the rise of technology. The story revolves around eight-year-old Bonnie, one of the few children not engrossed by devices, which affects her social life. To help her, Bonnie’s parents introduce a kid-friendly tablet, Lilypad, echoing popular toys like LeapFrog.

For Bonnie’s toys, this signifies an alarming shift as they learn from neglected toys that the traditional play era might end. The situation presents a dilemma, as Bonnie’s most cherished toy, Jessie, takes center stage against the technologically advanced Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return but have smaller roles compared to Joan Cusack’s Jessie, who must adapt to a world where technology dominates. Despite reservations about extending the beloved franchise, the film brings a relevant theme alongside its entertainment value.

The movie doesn’t demonize technology completely, as Lilypad claims to protect Bonnie’s interests. This nuanced perspective enriches the story, offering depth alongside familiar fun.

Joining Jessie in this adventure are returning characters such as Rex, Hamm, Bo Peep, and Forky. New characters, including Smarty Pants, voiced by Conan O’Brien, add fresh energy. The cast also includes Keanu Reeves, Bonnie Hunt, Craig Robinson, Kristen Schaal, Ernie Hudson, Alan Cumming, and Bad Bunny.

The film’s creators, Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris, bring expertise from previous Pixar successes, complemented by Randy Newman’s score and Taylor Swift’s closing song, ‘I Knew It, I Knew You.’

Overall, ‘Toy Story 5’ advances the series with discussions on technology, providing entertainment with familiar charm. Although it doesn’t match the original trilogy, its thoughtful approach and humor shine through.

Rated PG for thematic elements and humor, ‘Toy Story 5’ has a runtime of 1 hour and 42 minutes. It is now playing in theaters.
