FBI Takes Down High-Profile Fraud Suspect

4 days ago 0

A fugitive linked to a massive $1.2 billion Medicare fraud scheme has been arrested overseas and brought back to the United States. The FBI captured Herbert Leon Kimble, a key suspect listed on the newly introduced ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ list. Federal authorities apprehended Kimble in the Philippines after he managed to evade the law for nearly two years.

Prosecutors allege that Kimble’s healthcare fraud operation manipulated Medicare, amassing over $1.2 billion in fraudulent charges. The scheme reportedly exploited thousands of beneficiaries, many of whom were elderly, by directing them toward unnecessary medical braces through call centers.

In 2019, Kimble pleaded guilty to various federal offenses such as conspiracy to defraud the United States, healthcare fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, and making false claims. Despite this, he failed to appear at his sentencing hearing in August 2024, prompting a federal arrest warrant and an international search effort.

The FBI launched its ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ list to identify and locate individuals involved in major fraud cases. Said Abdullahi Ereg was the first to be apprehended under this initiative, facing charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering.

FBI Director Kash Patel, alongside Vice President J.D. Vance, continues to lead efforts to combat fraud. The recent arrests underscore a commitment to fulfilling directives aimed at cracking down on fraud and safeguarding taxpayer funds.

Vice President Vance emphasized the significance of the Most Wanted Fraudsters list in bringing offenders to justice. He highlighted the collaboration with the FBI and their success in capturing Kimble thanks to the Philippine government’s cooperation.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche reiterated that fleeing the country does not equate to escaping justice. He praised the FBI’s relentless pursuit, indicating ongoing efforts to apprehend more suspects from the list.
