On Friday, President Trump took an unusual step by endorsing both candidates in the Republican runoff for the South Carolina governor race. Initially, he supported only one, but the situation evolved.
President Trump first endorsed Pamela Evette, the lieutenant governor, in late May. This was a significant move, as his endorsement is highly sought in Republican races. During this election cycle, it has had a notable impact on Senate and House primaries.
The president decided to support both runoff candidates for the governorship, reflecting his mixed outcomes with governor races in the midterms. Last month, Trump backed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette to become South Carolina’s governor. However, she couldn’t avoid a runoff election.
Trump, closely monitoring his political influence, announced on Truth Social that he would also endorse Evette’s opponent, Alan Wilson. Wilson has served as South Carolina’s attorney general for 15 years. Trump explained his decision, stating, “I can’t hurt one of them by only endorsing the other, so, therefore, I am going to endorse, for Governor of South Carolina, both Pam Evette and Alan Wilson!” He assured that “with either one you can’t go wrong.”
Following Trump’s announcement, Senator Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, endorsed Alan Wilson. This further boosted Wilson’s campaign, which was already leading in several polls ahead of the Tuesday runoff. Trump’s support could potentially strengthen Wilson’s position in the race.
