The Parthenon, a renowned temple in Athens and an exemplar of Classical architecture, has undergone a significant restoration.
Restoration Milestone
The Greek Ministry of Culture revealed on Thursday that the western facade of the Parthenon is now in its most complete form in over 220 years. This follows the addition of marble slabs to fill gaps in the temple’s western pediment.
Restoration efforts for the pediment began in 2017, under the guidance of the Acropolis Restoration Service, a branch of the culture ministry.

Architectural and Historical Significance
The ancient temple, dedicated to the goddess Athena, was originally constructed with white marble. It was ornately designed to display the city’s affluence and authority. The temple’s two triangular pediments, positioned over its grand fluted columns, once featured sculptures of mythical narratives.
Many sculptures, such as statues of Greek deities and panels illustrating centaurs in combat with humans, were removed over 220 years ago by Lord Elgin, a British aristocrat and then ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.
These artifacts, often referred to as the Elgin Marbles, were sold to the British government and are currently held in the British Museum. Discussions between the British Museum and the Greek government commenced in 2021 regarding the potential repatriation of these sculptures.
Visitor Management
The Acropolis, where the Parthenon and other ancient monuments reside, attracts millions of visitors annually. To address overcrowding, Greece implemented a daily visitor cap at the site in 2023.
