Investigators examined the wreckage of a business jet crash on a Texas highway, searching for clues to the cause. The crash, which occurred Tuesday night near Laredo, close to the Mexican border, resulted in one death. The plane experienced mechanical problems, prompting the pilots to seek an emergency landing at a nearby airport.
Witnesses ran from their vehicles to assist police in rescuing passengers and crew from the burning jet. Video footage captured an individual using a sledgehammer to break the cockpit glass while others attempted to open the plane’s door with makeshift tools. A firefighter entered the smoke-filled aircraft to rescue an individual who remained inside after others had escaped.
The loss of life is deeply regrettable, but it’s a miracle this tragedy did not become a mass fatality event.– Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño
The cause of the crash has not been determined. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. According to Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez Jr., investigators reconstructed the crash at the site on Wednesday.
The identity of the deceased has not been released, respecting the family’s request. The plane’s occupants included two pilots and three teenagers. The Cessna Citation Latitude took off from San José del Cabo, Mexico, and was en route to Austin, Texas, according to the FAA. Operated by NetJets, a company owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, the jet offered fractional ownership of private planes. NetJets is cooperating with authorities.
The jet crashed around 10 p.m. on the Loop 20 highway, shortly after pilots alerted the local airport of mechanical problems. Reports indicated low fuel and a power outage before communication with air traffic controllers ceased, stated Gilberto Sanchez, Laredo International Airport Director.
A dashcam video shared online depicted the aircraft’s descent, colliding with a light post and finally stopping near the airport. The jet hit a car, causing injury to a motorist, who was hospitalized in stable condition, according to Laredo police investigator Jose Baeza. Videos on social media showed the plane damaged and resting on its side against a highway barrier.
Witness Zayra Garza, who filmed the unfolding scene, described her shock, likening it to a movie. As her husband tried to help, she observed people leaving their cars to aid the rescue efforts. Garza saw the plane’s door open, and several individuals, including teenagers and the pilot, escaped. Smoke filled the aircraft as firefighters helped extract the remaining passenger, with some police officers suffering smoke inhalation.
Garza expressed concern over the potential for an explosion, noting the threat of fire. Five officers received medical treatment for smoke inhalation.
This crash marked the third major aviation incident in recent days, following a B-52 crash in California and a skydiving plane crash in Missouri, resulting in multiple fatalities.
