Floyd “Money” Mayweather, known for building wealth around his nickname, confronts a legal battle. The celebrated boxer may face significant prison time due to a bounced check issue related to a luxury purchase in Las Vegas.
Clark County prosecutors charged Mayweather with two felonies. These include theft of property valued over $100,000 and issuing a bad check with fraudulent intent.
The Alleged Incident
Authorities claim that Mayweather’s alleged crime occurred during a shopping spree on New Year’s Eve in 2024. He aimed to acquire a rare Audemars Piguet watch.
Mayweather’s mode of payment was a $200,000 check from his Wells Fargo account. However, the bank returned the check due to insufficient funds, leading to complications.
Attempts to Resolve the Issue
The boutique involved reportedly made multiple attempts over a year to resolve the issue discreetly. They sent a certified demand letter, hoping to avert public attention, but received no response.
Legal Proceedings and Potential Consequences
A criminal summons was issued, and Mayweather’s defense team appeared in Las Vegas court. If found guilty on both counts, the undefeated boxer could face up to 24 years in prison.
Financial Struggles
The $200,000 check may be part of larger financial challenges. Mayweather owes a vast $7 million to the IRS for back taxes. Additionally, he was recently ordered to pay $1 million in child support arrears to a former dancer.
Further complicating this situation are other civil lawsuits. These involve unpaid charges for private jet services and apartment rent in Manhattan.
Future Endeavors
Despite his financial woes, Mayweather plans a series of exhibition bouts. This includes a highly awaited match against Manny Pacquiao in September.
