Backing the British Government
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have shown their support for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s initiative to ban social media access for children under 16. Since 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been vocal about the risks of social media. They previously praised similar regulations introduced in Australia. Their recent stance aligns them with the British government, contrasting the U.S.’s regulatory perspective.
The UK’s Proposed Policy
The U.K. government aims to enforce a ban on children under 16 using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook by spring 2027. While messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Signal are not included, 16 and 17-year-olds will face default restrictions on live streaming and stranger communication. Despite maintaining a low profile on social media, Meghan uses Instagram.
“We welcome the UK Government’s announcement of new measures to better protect children online,” Harry and Meghan said in a statement to Newsweek.
They emphasized that companies must share the responsibility to protect children, and stronger protections are necessary to prevent harm.
The Call for Broader Tech Reform
Harry and Meghan acknowledged the UK’s steps forward but highlighted that lasting change demands foundational platform safety and accountability. This perspective suggests further tech reform without directly opposing regulation. Contrarily, the U.S. opposes such a ban due to concerns about free expression and burdens on platforms.
The U.S. Embassy in London argues against broad social media bans, advocating instead for robust parental tools.
Transatlantic Tensions Over Tech Regulation
Tech regulation is a contentious issue between the U.S. and the U.K. President Trump discussed potential tariffs against the U.K. if Britain’s Digital Services Tax persisted, defending American companies as national assets. Restrictions like taxes and access limits create an ongoing dispute.
Archewell’s Previous Stance
Harry and Meghan have supported child protection measures in Australia, advocating for technology companies’ accountability. While their language was stronger there, their fundamental message remains consistent. They hope for technology designed with safety in mind.
Evolving Views of Prince Harry
Prince Harry’s focus has shifted since Trump’s reelection. His recent positive statements about the U.K. contrast with his earlier praise of U.S. life. He has addressed international relations, especially regarding U.S. foreign policy in Ukraine. While he cherishes his British identity, recent statements reflect a nuanced view.
