In a 2010 interview, Bobby Pulido, a Latin Grammy winner and Democratic congressional candidate, shared an interesting detail about his past. He admitted he hasn’t gone shopping since becoming a music star. While he did visit supermarkets during his college years, he hasn’t stepped into one since his career took off 15 years ago.
Pulido, known for Tejano music and songs like “Desvelado” and “Se Murió de Amor,” has won five Latin Grammy nominations. He won Best Tejano Album in both 2022 and 2025. Now, he is the Democratic candidate for a competitive congressional district in Texas. His portrayal of himself faces challenges as Democrats focus on affordability issues, amid inflation and high gas prices affecting President Donald Trump.
“The economy we care about isn’t just numbers on a board on Wall Street. It’s in our pockets, at the pump, in the grocery store when we buy essentials. Some people must choose between paying rent or health insurance,” Pulido’s campaign page states.
Inflation has recently increased, with a rate of 4.2% in May, up from 3.8% in April, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pulido argues this rise impacts his district, which he claims has the lowest per-capita income in Texas.
“In the Rio Grande Valley, inflation hits us hard. We don’t earn much to start with. Inflation affects us more significantly; others might get a cold, but for us, it feels like the flu,” Pulido mentioned on a podcast.
Pulido aims to unseat Rep. Monica De La Cruz, R-Texas, in a race considered one of the competitive chances for Democrats in Texas following redistricting efforts. His success will rely on his ability to garner support from various voters.
De La Cruz, a two-term incumbent, won her last election in 2024 with 57.1% to 42.9% against Democratic nominee Michelle Vallejo. After clearing the Democratic primary, Pulido will challenge De La Cruz on November 3.
