Oklahoma Political Shifts
In Oklahoma, two notable political races are underway. Governor Kevin Stitt cannot seek re-election due to term limits. Meanwhile, former U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin left his position to take over as Homeland Security Secretary, succeeding Kristi Noem. Alan Armstrong, an energy executive, temporarily fills the U.S. Senate seat. However, state law bars him from pursuing a full term as an interim appointee.
Representative Kevin Hern, who has served four terms and has Trump’s endorsement, is now vying for the Republican Senate primary. He faces competition from four other contenders with lesser public profiles. The Republican primary for governor is more competitive, featuring nine candidates. A runoff on August 25th is likely if no candidate earns over 50% of the votes.
California Special Election
California will hold a special election to fill the vacancy left by former Representative Eric Swalwell, who resigned in April. Allegations of sexual assault and other accusations led to his departure. At the time, Swalwell was a major contender for the governor’s race, from which he also withdrew.
A woman accused Swalwell of sexual assault in 2019 and 2024, claiming intoxication impaired her ability to consent. Despite these allegations, Swalwell denied any misconduct and plans to defend himself. The San Francisco Chronicle initially reported the accusations.
Georgia GOP Runoffs
In Georgia, runoffs are set to determine Republican nominees for the Senate and governor. Previously, no candidate secured a majority in the May primary. The Senate race features a face-off between Rep. Mike Collins, who aligns with MAGA principles, and Derek Dooley, a political newcomer and ex-football coach. Trump recently endorsed Collins to challenge Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in November.
For the governor’s spot, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones competes against Rick Jackson, a billionaire. Trump endorsed Jones last August. The victor will face Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, previously Atlanta’s mayor, later this year.
Washington, DC Primaries
Washington, DC’s primary elections are notable as voters can elect a new mayor and congressional delegate simultaneously for the first time since 1990. At that time, gas prices were below $1.35, and George H.W. Bush was in office. This election holds significant impact for the city’s political future.
