Trump and Zelenskyy Prepare for Meeting as Ukraine Highlights G7 Topics

1 week ago 0

Leaders have started assembling for the opening session of the G7 summit, with Russia’s war in Ukraine being a central focus. Italy, Germany, Britain, Japan, and Canada representatives were seen engaged in lively discussions with the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, as they awaited other attendees. Trump, Zelenskyy, and France’s Emmanuel Macron had yet to arrive.

Trump mentioned his optimism about advancing efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. ‘Now that this (Iran) is finished, we’re going to be focusing on that,’ he stated prior to the summit. The U.S. had been more actively involved in negotiating an end to Ukraine’s war before the dispute with Iran redirected attention, a conflict now over four years long. Recent months have seen a decline in these diplomatic efforts, with Zelenskyy consistently urging Western nations to recommit to support Ukraine and press Russia.

Oil Prices Fall Due to Iran Agreement

Energy prices saw a significant drop, while global stocks experienced a mild rise on Monday following the U.S. and Iran’s announcement of an accord to cease hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. crude oil prices decreased by 4.8% to $80.75 per barrel, whereas Brent crude fell by 4.7% to $83.17 per barrel. These figures are the lowest for both benchmarks since early March, shortly after the Iran conflict began.

Whether prices will continue to fall remains highly questionable due to various market forces and geopolitical factors that often influence the energy sector, industry analysts noted.

Vance Confirms Nuclear Inspectors Returning to Iran

Vice President JD Vance affirmed that nuclear inspectors would return to Iran under the new agreement reached with the U.S. to end the prolonged Middle Eastern conflict. ‘Yes, absolutely,’ Vance assured NBC News in an interview. ‘A crucial part of the agreement involves the International Atomic Energy Agency and the U.S. aiding Iran in dismantling its stockpile of highly enriched material, clearly outlined in the memorandum of understanding (MOU),’

Vance added that the MOU, serving as a foundation for ending the conflict, will be available following a signing ceremony in Switzerland, as previously articulated by President Trump.

Trump Faces G7 Allies Split Over Dual Conflicts

At the G7 summit, President Trump encounters allies who disagree with him over two particular conflicts: one initiated under controversial circumstances, and another where more action is sought from the U.S. by these nations. Over the next two days at the Group of Seven meeting, held in Evian-les-Bains, the two wars—one involving Iran and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict—will be major discussion topics among world leaders.
