Anthropic, a company based in San Francisco, has been ordered by the U.S. government to suspend its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models due to national security concerns. The announcement was made on Friday night, with the federal government expressing worries about the potential misuse of these A.I. systems.
In a post shared on social media, Anthropic stated it must immediately disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers to comply with the government’s order. This suspension also affects foreign nationals employed by the company.
Claude Mythos, one of the A.I. models, was introduced in April. However, Anthropic did not make it publicly available, citing the risk of it being used as a tool for hackers to infiltrate computer networks. The system has been a significant concern for both Washington and Silicon Valley, highlighting the growing threats posed by advanced A.I.
Before the suspension, Anthropic had shared the Claude A.I. system with around 40 organizations responsible for critical computer infrastructure. These organizations were using the system to address security vulnerabilities before they could be exploited by hackers.
The decision to restrict access to these A.I. models came from the Commerce Department. The duration of these restrictions remains uncertain.
