Officials have confirmed the death of a suspect following a shooting incident in Midland, Texas, which resulted in one person dead and eleven injured. The event began Friday morning, according to Midland Mayor Lori Blong.
The shooting started around 8 a.m. and moved near a veterinary hospital. The suspect engaged in a standoff with law enforcement that lasted about two hours.
Midland Police responded to the active shooting scene, deploying armored vehicles and using robots for area surveillance. Andrea Mendias, an employee at a nearby automobile body shop, reported hearing at least 40 shots.
Mayor Blong stated, “Officers are containing the situation,” and expressed condolences to the victims and gratitude to the responding officers. The police department released a statement on social media detailing their efforts to secure and clear the area with assistance from partner agencies.
Midland, a city with approximately 140,000 residents in West Texas, experienced a similar tragedy six years ago when a gunman killed seven people and injured two dozen in a shooting spree after being fired from his job. The city is located in the state’s oil-rich region, over 300 miles west of Dallas.
This is a developing story as further details emerge.
