2 weeks ago 0

Severe storms hit the Midwest, causing widespread power outages and damage across Illinois and Wisconsin. Tornadoes touched down, leading to at least one death and disrupting daily life.

Storm Impact Across Midwest

Up to 11 cities in Illinois and Wisconsin reported tornadoes. Wind gusts reached 75 mph in Mason City and 70 mph in Morton and Washington, Illinois. Over 243,000 customers lost power in Illinois, according to PowerOutage.us. Tornadoes were confirmed in rural areas southwest of Chicago, with some damage reported in Streator, Illinois. Mayor Tara Bedei confirmed no fatalities as of Thursday evening.

Rescue Efforts and Community Support

A tornado struck Streator, prompting rescues, including one by storm chaser Scott Lasker. In Missouri, Kylie Rouse shared how her family narrowly escaped a tornado that destroyed their home. They managed to find safety, though one of their hunting dogs remains missing. Rouse initiated a GoFundMe to assist in rebuilding efforts.

“Everything’s destroyed,” Rouse shared. “We were lucky to escape.”

Springfield, Illinois, saw significant damage, including at the Animal Protective League shelter. Fortunately, no animals were injured, and community members provided temporary housing for them.

Travel Disruptions and Weather Warnings

Flight delays and cancellations affected airports in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Newark due to the storms. Cooling centers and services activated in cities like Philadelphia and New York due to the forecasted heatwave, with expected temperatures reaching the mid-90s Fahrenheit, potentially feeling hotter with humidity.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Efforts continue to restore electricity across northern Illinois. Commonwealth Edison Company aims for 80% restoration by Saturday evening. The storms have led to structural damage in several areas, such as a Chicago apartment building roof being blown off and barns collapsing in Wisconsin.

The weather service indicates the system could continue affecting the East Coast with heat and humidity in the coming days.
