Mayor Zohran Mamdani purchased a standing-room-only ticket for roughly $1,000 to attend Game 3 of the NBA finals. He accessed house tickets not available to the general public.
The mayor attended the game, which the Knicks lost, along with some former colleagues from the State Legislature.
Despite choosing to attend the game, Mayor Mamdani was clear about covering the cost himself. He opted not to sit in the celebrity section or near President Trump, who was present in a bulletproof box at Madison Square Garden on Monday. His ticket was for standing room only, situated above the nosebleed seats.
Mr. Mamdani purchased the ticket from a reserved pool of house seats for VIPs and well-connected individuals. This practice is typical at sports and cultural events nationwide. By paying for his own ticket, he ensured compliance with city rules that forbid gifts to elected officials.
