Nic Smith, a defensive lineman for the University of Kentucky, has died at the age of 20, as announced by the football program. Smith was a redshirt freshman with the Wildcats last season.
Kentucky coach Will Stein expressed his condolences on Monday, stating, “Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.” The message was shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
University officials reported that campus police were alerted to an on-campus residence hall after a report of a possible body was made. Following this, the university confirmed Smith’s death. The University of Kentucky Police Department is collaborating with the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner for the investigation. An initial inquiry has found no signs of foul play.
This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory,” added Coach Stein.
Smith was enrolled in the community leadership and development program at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. His nickname was “Happy” or “Big Happ,” as noted on his biography on the Kentucky athletic department’s website.
In high school, he was involved in both football and basketball at Walnut Grove High School located in Loganville, Georgia.
