NASA is preparing for its next mission to return humans to the moon with the Artemis III mission, featuring an all-male crew. The mission’s team includes four astronauts, each bringing unique experiences and backgrounds to the table.
The Artemis III Crew:
- Commander Randy Bresnik
- Pilot Luca Parmitano from the European Space Agency
- Mission Specialist Frank Rubio
- Mission Specialist Andre Douglas
Three of these astronauts have considerable space experience, while one served as a backup on the Artemis II mission.
NASA announced the Artemis III crew on June 9, 2026. The mission follows the historic Artemis II mission, which marked the first time in over 50 years that astronauts approached the moon. Artemis II’s inclusive crew consisted of Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. This mission included the first Black man and the first woman to fly near the moon, along with the first Canadian astronaut.
On the other hand, Artemis III’s crew comprises Randy Bresnik, Luca Parmitano, Frank Rubio, and Andre Douglas. Mr. Douglas is a Black astronaut, Mr. Rubio is the first astronaut of Salvadoran descent, and Mr. Parmitano is the first representative from the European Space Agency on an Artemis mission. However, there are no women in this group.
Jared Isaacman, NASA’s administrator, addressed the absence of women in the Artemis III crew during a media briefing. He stated, “I don’t think anyone should be reading into this,” and emphasized that NASA selected the best-qualified astronauts to meet the mission’s goals. He did not elaborate on the specific selection criteria but mentioned that the most recent astronaut candidate class at NASA had more women than men.
Previously, NASA planned to include the first woman, a person of color, and the first non-American astronaut on a moon mission. This commitment was removed from NASA’s website following a federal crackdown on diversity initiatives in early 2025 by the previous administration.
