Physician Shortage in Southeastern State Leads to Longer Wait Times

The southeastern region of a state is experiencing a critical lack of physicians. This shortage results in patients enduring prolonged wait times for necessary medical care.

In February, an incident at a rural North Carolina middle school highlighted the severity of the situation. A child with no prior medical issues suffered a severe allergic reaction. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) quickly responded, and, at the parent’s request, began transport to a major medical center in Durham, which was more than 30 minutes away. However, during the journey, the child’s vital signs deteriorated.

Faced with a critical decision, the paramedics opted to divert to a much closer hospital located in Roxboro, only a few minutes away. At the emergency department there, the child required several medications and supportive interventions to stabilize her condition and save her life.
