ESPN’s latest venture into AI technology faced a setback during the NBA Finals, leading the network to discontinue its new project. The controversy began during Game 1 of the finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
During a commercial break, viewers saw an attempt to animate a classic photo of Tony Parker, a Spurs legend, using an AI-generated moving portrait. The reaction was largely negative, as fans found the portrayal unsettling and criticized the depiction of Parker.
Many viewers expressed confusion over ESPN’s choice to use AI, given the network’s extensive archive of NBA images and footage. On social media, users questioned the logic behind deploying AI-generated graphics instead of using original photographs.
Fans shared their disappointment, with some remarks questioning the identity of the AI-generated figure supposed to represent Parker.
In addition to Parker’s animated image, the network also attempted the technology with Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell and Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant. However, the moving portraits were missing from Game 2 and will not return for the rest of the series.
ESPN has since decided to discontinue the project. A network spokesperson confirmed that AI tools were used for the graphics, and management is currently reassessing the use of such technology in future broadcasts.
