Indiana’s Controversial Nuclear Family Proclamation During Pride Month

3 weeks ago 0

Cory Soller, who co-chairs Michigan City Pride, ignores Indiana’s leadership when celebrating Pride month. According to Soller, these statements are insignificant. A cross designed with transgender pride flag colors was present at the altar during the Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony at Metropolitan Community Church in Portage on November 20, 2025.

‘Regardless of the name, Pride month holds its value for those celebrating,’ said Soller. ‘We aim to build bridges and invite people, unlike the governor, who constructs barriers.’

On June 1, Gov. Mike Braun announced June as ‘nuclear family month’ in Indiana, which LGBTQ+ activists viewed as an affront. Some label it a political maneuver diverting attention from increasing living costs in the state. Braun, through his social media post, emphasized the significance of committed families by showcasing a photo of the proclamation. He highlighted the influence of families on America’s future as the nation’s 250th anniversary nears.

Pridefest participants, including drag entertainer Jeremy Gregson, known as Jessica DuPreé Chilton, and United Methodist Church Minister Leah Peksenak, engaged joyously at Riverview Park in Lake Station on June 18, 2025. Braun, accompanied by Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, persisted on social media, stressing the health and success benefits of nuclear families. Beckwith encouraged people to ‘Take back the rainbow!’ and shared a Bible verse celebrating divine truth.

At a news conference, Braun insisted his proclamation didn’t target LGBTQ+ groups. Nonetheless, U.S. Census data reveals that only 18% of Indiana families are nuclear. Soller argued that Braun’s proclamation dismisses over 80% of Hoosiers, including diverse family structures. Yet, Michigan City Pride Fest will welcome all families to foster unity.

Running from 1 to 8 p.m. on June 13 at the Guy Foreman Amphitheatre, Michigan City Pride Fest extends invitations to all family types. Indiana Democratic Party Chairwoman, Karen Tallian, deemed Braun’s actions during Pride month questionable, hinting at political distraction from existing state issues. She criticized the proclamation as a superficial response amidst serious statewide problems.

Leah Peksenak, Northwest Indiana Pridefest president, expected Braun to declare June as nuclear family month and viewed it as an unnecessary mimicry of the dominant culture. Pride month is vital for resistance, joy, and awareness despite prevalent societal divisions.

Northwest Indiana Pridefest is scheduled for June 6 and 7 at Sunset Hill Farm County Park in Valparaiso. Research shows that household stability benefits children, with gay men having the nation’s lowest divorce rates. Peksenak is considering a counter proclamation through collaboration with social justice groups to counter Braun’s announcement, ensuring inclusivity for all family types in leadership narratives.

Zoe O’Haillen-Berne, from Indiana Youth Group, expressed concern over Braun’s message possibly harming youth perception, highlighting the significance of equal validity among family types. The organization strives to promote acceptance and inclusion across Indiana.

LGBTQ+ Outreach of Porter County criticized the timing of Braun’s proclamation. They urged for government acknowledgments that celebrate family diversity, emphasizing the vital role diverse families play in state prosperity.

Kim Eldridge, president of Indivisible NWI, expressed concern about the implications of Braun’s proclamation, which she fears might embolden divisive rhetoric against women and the LGBTQ+ community.
