Controversies Surrounding Graham Platner Raise Concerns for Democrats

3 weeks ago 0

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has emphasized the need to thoroughly review emerging reports concerning Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner before formulating her views on recent allegations of aggressive behavior.

Ocasio-Cortez stated, “This all kind of just came out. I’ve been doing legislative business on the floor, so I need to dig into everything further before commenting on it.” She highlighted her desire to maintain respect while evaluating the situation.

The caution from Ocasio-Cortez follows a report released by the New York Times detailing accounts from several women who previously had romantic ties with Platner. These women shared claims of rape fantasies, excessive drinking, and violent episodes.

Platner admitted to battling post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from his military service. He shared with Fox News Digital, “Throughout this campaign, I’ve been open about what was a very dark period of my life where I struggled with undiagnosed PTSD, too often self-medicated with alcohol and was far from a perfect boyfriend.”

Lyndsey Fifield, a former girlfriend, recounted an incident involving Platner reportedly pushing and restraining her. She managed to leave after sleeping and awaking later.

The Times detailed Fifield’s claims, including Platner’s violent fantasies and a chest tattoo of a Totenkopf, a symbol associated with Nazi concentration camp guards. Platner’s explanation of his military unit’s choice to adopt the tattoo due to perceived parallels with the Schutzstaffel contradicts his earlier narrative of ignorance regarding its Nazi roots.

As a progressive, Platner has yet to receive an endorsement from Ocasio-Cortez in his effort to unseat Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine.

While Platner’s campaign focuses on progressive economic policies, including billionaire taxes and reduced costs for working-class citizens, concerns continue to mount about his suitability for candidacy. Criticisms have emerged over Platner’s previous comments on sexual abuse, racial issues, terror, and inappropriate exchanges with women outside his marriage.

Platner’s comments, including a Reddit post blaming rape victims for their lack of self-protection, have resurfaced and drawn further scrutiny.

The controversy surrounding Platner includes allegations from ex-girlfriends citing abuse and revelations of a Nazi tattoo. Platner acknowledged exchanging sexual messages with multiple women after he had married his wife, as reported.

Despite the mounting controversies, Platner remains poised to claim the Democratic nomination to challenge Senator Collins. He recently met with senators to assure them of his capability as a candidate.

Maine’s Senate primaries are scheduled to occur next Tuesday.
