Senator Bernie Sanders, holding a position for Vermont, confronted Republican staffers dressed in towels outside the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) headquarters. The confrontation was sparked by the Republican’s criticism over Sanders’ support for Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. The GOP staffers, from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), mocked Platner using towels to imitate a controversial Kik profile photo of him partly clad with a towel.
Video reveals protesters questioning Sanders on Platner’s Kik profile as he arrived at the DSCC headquarters in Washington, D.C. The meeting involved Platner and several high-profile Democrats as the candidate grappled with his controversies ahead of the June 9 primary.
The protest featured signs targeting Platner, citing his Kik photo, a tattoo linked to Nazi symbols, and other scandals like his inappropriate Reddit comments. Platner’s past includes comments on rape, racial stereotypes, and political violence, leading to increased scrutiny.
Despite having covered up the tattoo and apologizing for past comments, new issues arose when reports mentioned Platner’s texts during his marriage and the Kik profile photo. Kik, an app linked to child exploitation, faces criticism for being a ‘predator’s paradise.’
Protesters chanted and held placards saying things such as, “Platner is a creep!” and “Delete your Kik!” Video footage captured both protesters and National Republican Senatorial Committee staffers mocking the Kik photo with towels. When Sanders was asked about the Kik account, he retorted, questioning the Republican Party’s morality. He referenced morality and corruption, pointing to President Trump.
Reports show no evidence of Platner communicating with minors on Kik. The controversy primarily concerns the app’s negative reputation and the suggestive profile photo, along with other reports about Platner’s marriages and messages. Platner disputes aspects of these reports and his wife has expressed dissatisfaction over the invasion of their private life.
These protests aim to highlight Platner’s scandals, creating a challenge for national Democrats like Sanders who continue to endorse him as Maine’s Democratic Senate primary approaches.
