Knicks Fans Consider Cheaper Alternatives for NBA Finals

3 weeks ago 0

Fans of the New York Knicks looking to attend the NBA Finals face a steep cost for tickets at Madison Square Garden (MSG). As of publication, the lowest price for a Knicks home game ticket at MSG is close to $4,000. In contrast, flying to San Antonio for a game can provide significant savings.

According to analyst Matt Egan, traveling to San Antonio would be cheaper for Knicks fans. A few nights at a hotel in San Antonio cost around $600. A round-trip flight is priced at approximately $700. Tickets for Game 1 and Game 2 at San Antonio are roughly $750 and $1,100, respectively. Altogether, fans would spend about $3,100, well below the nearly $4,000 for a game in New York.

“It absolutely would be cheaper [to fly to San Antonio for a game],” Egan stated.

The disparity isn’t going unnoticed. Ticket data indicates that 30% of Game 2 purchases in San Antonio come from individuals with New York ZIP codes.

Near-courtside seats by Celebrity Row at MSG fetch as much as $220,000. Even affluent fans are balking at the prices. Sal Galatioto, president of Galatioto Sports Partners, expressed reluctance to spend $100,000 for a game.

“Even the wealthy fans are getting priced out,” he remarked.

President Donald Trump mentioned plans to attend a MSG game, possibly for Game 3 after receiving invitations. He also commented on working to address high ticket prices for sports fans.

The excitement around the Knicks’ first NBA Finals appearance since 1999 contributes to the price surge. There is palpable enthusiasm for this matchup, partly due to Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who at 22, has become one of the league’s most intriguing players.

The Knicks are +155 underdogs in the series, and prices could rise further if it reaches Game 6, scheduled at MSG. The NBA Finals in New York resemble a Super Bowl moment in terms of pricing.
