The Cleveland Browns have made a significant move in the NFL by trading Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, to the Los Angeles Rams. Garrett, who set the league’s single-season sack record, joins a strong Rams team, leaving the Browns to navigate their first season without him since 2016.
Garrett had previously requested a trade, but the Browns secured him with a four-year, $160 million extension. This deal was intended to keep him in Cleveland until 2030. Despite this, the trade opportunity with the Rams proved irresistible for the Browns. The deal includes 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, a first-round pick in 2027, a second-round pick in 2028, and a third-round pick in 2029.
“Myles Garrett is a foundational player, Hall of Fame-worthy, and a homegrown talent who’s been here for a decade,” said Browns General Manager Andrew Berry. “Opportunities can force you to reevaluate and that’s what happened here. It was too great to pass up.”
Garrett’s performance has been outstanding, with double-digit sacks in eight consecutive seasons, including 23 sacks last season alone. Meanwhile, the Rams are strengthening their roster. They extended Matthew Stafford’s contract and drafted Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick.
The Browns have positioned themselves for future drafts. After drafting tackle Spencer Fano and wide receiver K.C. Concepcion with two first-round picks, they are set for two more in next year’s draft.
Jared Verse, now part of the Browns, has shown promise with two Pro Bowl appearances in his first two seasons. He has recorded 12.0 sacks and 22 tackles for loss.
