President Trump actively engaged in Colombia’s presidential race by endorsing a right-wing candidate. His support aligns with his pattern of influencing foreign elections during his second term.
Trump communicated his endorsement through a post on Truth Social, praising Abelardo De La Espriella. De La Espriella advanced to the second round of the election after Sunday’s vote and will compete against the candidate from the party of the current leftist president, Gustavo Petro.
The results of this Election are very important to the future of Colombia and its relationship to the United States,Trump wrote. He emphasized De La Espriella’s accomplishments and political support for him, calling De La Espriella by his campaign name, “El Tigre.” He declared his full endorsement of De La Espriella.
Throughout his presidency, Trump has expressed support for like-minded leaders, contributing to a right-wing trend in Latin America. He also described De La Espriella’s opponent, Iván Cepeda, as a “Radical Left Marxist.” Cepeda’s campaign did not immediately comment.
On the same night, De La Espriella expressed gratitude for Trump’s support, committing to strengthen U.S.-Colombia relations. In an interview with a Colombian news outlet, he emphasized the importance of U.S. support in combating crime and narcoterrorism in Colombia.
