The Chicago White Sox achieved a remarkable 18 victories in May, their highest count for any month since May 2021. General Manager Chris Getz expressed his satisfaction before a game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. “It was a quality month,” Getz noted, emphasizing the strength of the homestand against both Minnesota and Detroit, resulting in impressive series wins. These successes reflect the players’ determination and camaraderie.
The White Sox secured a three-out-of-four series win over the Twins and swept the Tigers in a three-game face-off. The homestand concluded with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Detroit, marking the team’s 16th comeback win of the season, leading the American League. Getz praised the team and fans, recognizing their unwavering spirit and enthusiasm.
In May, the White Sox posted an 18-10 record, achieving the second-highest winning percentage (.643) in the AL, closely following the Tampa Bay Rays at .692. However, the team faces a short-term challenge with first baseman Munetaka Murakami on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. Jacob Gonzalez, showing promise with 19 home runs in Triple-A, steps up in Murakami’s absence. Getz remains optimistic about Gonzalez’s role, acknowledging the unpredictability of injuries but seeing it as an opportunity for others to contribute.
Murakami’s recovery timeline is estimated at four to six weeks, leaving room for cautious anticipation. This represents his first significant injury, underscoring the importance of patience in his healing process. Gonzalez, drafted in 2023, made strides on his debut, going 1-for-3. The call-up players, including him, have consistently impacted throughout the season.
Getz also highlighted the contributions of the minor-league system, crediting managers and coaches for well-preparing players for major-league challenges. He praised the Triple-A managers, such as Chad Pinder, for their dedication to player development. Results are evident as many players successfully transition to the major league, turning potential into performance.
Additionally, the Sox reinstated outfielder Austin Hays from a rehab stint due to a recurring left calf soreness. Hays had been on the injured list since early May with a calf strain, marking another challenge in an eventful season.
