The television world is observing significant unrest at CBS’s highly-rated program, ’60 Minutes.’ Veteran correspondent Scott Pelley expressed his concerns, claiming that CBS News head, Bari Weiss, was jeopardizing the show’s quality and suggested that the new producer lacked sufficient experience for the role. These claims surfaced during a meeting between the show’s team and newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton.
According to Status, a media news outlet that reportedly reviewed a recording of the meeting, Pelley questioned Bilton about the recent dismissals of former producer Tanya Simon and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Status indicated that Pelley criticized Bilton, a former technology journalist and filmmaker, for allegedly having minimal qualifications for traditional broadcast news.
Pelley also reportedly attacked Weiss’s qualifications for her position at CBS News, stating that her decisions, particularly related to the ‘CBS Evening News,’ were detrimental. Bilton defended Weiss, asserting her affection for ’60 Minutes.’ Pelley disagreed, saying she meant to destroy the show.
A representative close to CBS News leadership suggested that Weiss and Bilton made efforts to communicate with Pelley about maintaining his significant role within ’60 Minutes.’
The New York Times also reviewed the meeting’s recording and described Pelley as audibly distressed during his confrontation with Bilton. An executive cited in the Times report claimed Weiss was ready to attend the meeting but was advised against it.
This tense interaction followed a memo from Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski. The message encouraged a ‘new approach’ aimed at rejuvenating the show by expanding its scope and maintaining its standards of ambition and impartiality. Bilton was praised as embodying the vigor and determination reminiscent of the show’s founders.
Status detailed that Pelley’s remarks received support from other staff members during the meeting. While Pelley critiqued the staff dismissals as harsh, Bilton asserted his resilience, recounting his long journalism career and experience with influential figures, indicating that Pelley’s confrontation did not unsettle him.
