Community and unity were central at the fifth annual Waukegan Pride Parade and Festival. Crowds lined the route, watching colorful floats. Thousands gathered at the lakefront. Greg Brown, president of Waukegan Friends, the event organizer, emphasized the event’s celebration of unity.
Brown highlighted the commitment to showcasing a welcoming community for all in Waukegan. He stated, The focus is on our LGBTQ+ core welcomed in Waukegan, which helps make the community what it is.
The theme of inclusion resonated with parade participants.
The parade began with the city Fire Department leading. Brown followed, driving a vehicle towing a decorated boat. The parade traveled along Sheridan Road to the lakefront, where over 4,000 people enjoyed food and entertainment at On the Rocks.
Mayor Sam Cunningham rode in a convertible at the front, emphasizing the city’s tradition of inclusivity. The city of Waukegan was the first in Lake County to fly the pride flag,
he noted, describing the city’s commitment to unity and respect.
The event featured colorful floats, decorated cars, and vehicles from the Lambda Car Club, showcasing a range of automobilia. The festival at Waukegan Harbor & Marina included performers, food trucks, and vendors in Siver Park.

Evan and Alyse Middleton enjoyed the festival’s entertainment but emphasized the significance of supporting the community. It’s a chance to enjoy each other’s company,
Alyse said.
Eric Schuermann, president of the Lake Michigan Region of the Lambda Car Club, spoke about the club’s participation. We are here to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community,
he said. The club showcased 25 vehicles during the parade.
The Rev. Mark Rollenhagen, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, walked with congregants. Acknowledging their church’s welcoming stance, Rollenhagen stressed the importance of support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Businesses like American Place Casino also participated, demonstrating community commitment. Brooke Wallace, the casino’s public relations manager, stated, We’re showing our support for Waukegan and the community by partnering with Waukegan Friends.
