Potential Roster Changes for Eagles and Giants Involving Top Wide Receivers

3 weeks ago 0

As the start of the 2026 NFL season approaches, two teams are eyeing some pivotal decisions concerning their roster. The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants are focusing on major moves with prominent wide receivers A.J. Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. These changes could unfold as early as Monday.

New York Giants’ Plans

The New York Giants have been in discussions with Odell Beckham Jr. for more than a month. Reports confirm Beckham will visit the Giants’ facility on Monday. His return is significant as he was originally drafted by the Giants in 2014. Beckham, now 33, has expressed a strong desire to rejoin the team and has engaged in several activities with them, such as attending a team charity softball game.

The Giants are addressing roster needs by working out players like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Anthony Miller, and Braxton Berrios. Smith-Schuster, familiar with the team’s playbook, strengthens their options due to his experience with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy last season in Kansas City. Beckham’s potential addition would fill a gap left by Gunner Olszewski’s injury, an Achilles tear. Although Beckham isn’t a special teams player like Olszewski or Berrios, he is favored by coach John Harbaugh, offering some flexibility as Malik Nabors recovers from surgery.

Philadelphia Eagles’ Strategy

The Eagles are positioned to make a trade involving star receiver A.J. Brown. The financial efficiency triggered by June 1 allows the Eagles to distribute Brown’s trade impact over multiple seasons, unlike earlier when a trade would’ve meant a $43.4 million dead-money charge at once. Now, the cost drops significantly, making the trade manageable.

The New England Patriots have shown the most interest in acquiring Brown. However, the Eagles demand a first-round pick for him, a price tag few teams, including the Patriots, are willing to pay. Despite the logistical ease of trading Brown now, the Eagles remain cautious, seeking suitable market value for him.

Questions arise about why the Eagles would let go of a productive receiver like Brown, who is nearing 29 and still in his peak years. Concern stems from Brown’s expressed dissatisfaction with his limited role in the Eagles’ offense, particularly last season due to a run-focused strategy centering on Saquon Barkley. Brown’s public expressions of discontent and his substantial contract have fueled speculation around his future with the team.

The Eagles have prepared by adding depth to their receiving lineup, seemingly gearing for a lineup without Brown. This anticipated future without him may begin shortly.
