16-Year-Old Lifeguard Honored for Brave Ocean Rescue

Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard in Santa Cruz, California, has been recognized for his heroism after saving a child’s life. The incident occurred during dangerous rip tides and powerful waves at Seabright State Beach. The child’s father, Sumit Rai, has publicly expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Ryder’s actions.

Williams’ courageous act has earned him an invitation to the White House to receive a civilian honor. The rescue took place amid a high surf advisory, with waves reaching up to 10 feet. Nathaniel, a 10-year-old boy, was swept into the ocean while standing on wet sand near the shoreline.

“My son called and told me, ‘Dad, I drowned. I went unconscious.’ I’m listening to him, and he thinks he is going to die,” Rai shared on Fox News Live.

Witnesses reported that the rescue lasted significantly longer than documented in the viral video, highlighting Williams’ refusal to give up despite harsh conditions. Ryder spotted Nathaniel from his station at Tower 2 and quickly sprang into action. He alerted the situation, removed his devices, grabbed his gear, and rushed into the turbulent water to reach the boy.

The dramatic rescue involved Williams holding Nathaniel through several crushing waves until fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen joined to assist. Rai remarked on the difficulty of carrying a limp child, saying it required Williams to navigate roughly 100 pounds through the surf.

“Doing that is remarkable,” Rai said. “There is no way I could ever repay him.”

After bringing Nathaniel safely to shore, Williams and Bohnen checked the child for injuries. Rai, absent from the beach during the event, expressed his immense relief and appreciation.

“The first thing I’ll do is give him a big hug,” he said. “I’m so relieved and grateful for Ryder and his courage and heroism. Without him, my son wouldn’t be alive.”

The rescue gained national attention, leading President Donald Trump to suggest Williams deserves recognition at the White House. Rai echoed this sentiment when speaking with Fox News Live.

“He absolutely should. I’m for any award or recognition,” he said. “I’m his biggest fan, and I am so grateful for what he did. My children are precious to me and nothing means more to me.”

Williams reflected on his role as a lifeguard and the importance of his work.

“I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely,” Williams said. “This is my job and I love what I do. I’m thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day.”

Over the weekend, the lifeguard team at California State Parks’ Santa Cruz District completed 34 rescues and engaged in over 5,000 preventative actions along the coastline.
