Zion Rose’s Journey to the MLB: Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Dreams

Zion Rose, a former Brother Rice star, reached his professional baseball goal ahead of schedule. Despite injuries and a change in position, Rose excelled in his journey. After playing three seasons at Brother Rice, he transferred to IMG Academy in Florida for his senior year. Rose then found college success at Louisville. On Saturday, his MLB aspirations came true when selected by the Kansas City Royals with the sixth overall pick in the MLB draft in Philadelphia.

Rose expressed gratitude during a press conference. “It’s been my dream for a long time, so to be able to see it come to fruition was amazing,” he said. “I got to share it with my family and the people who supported me my whole life, so I’m just grateful to be here.” Rose, a 21-year-old outfielder and the 2022 Daily Southtown Baseball Player of the Year, was predicted to be a late first-round pick. However, the Royals surprised many by choosing him early.

Brother Rice coach Sean McBride shared his excitement. “I’m just overly excited,” McBride said. “We knew early on that there was potential for him to be a high draft pick. He’s put in a lot of work.” Rose faced challenges, including injuries this spring, but remained determined. He missed some games due to ankle and hamstring issues but still hit .417 with six homers and 24 stolen bases in 36 games for Louisville. Transitioning fully to an outfielder, Rose left behind his catching position from high school and early college days.

Some of Rose’s former teammates always believed in his potential. One such teammate, Bryce Nevils, recognized his determination early on. “Zion just has a special mindset,” Nevils said. “In high school, he would teach us how to take rounds of batting practice the correct way.” This strong work ethic inspired many Chicago college players who now aspire to follow in his footsteps.

Rose’s journey included leaving Brother Rice, but the community maintains pride in him. Coach McBride recalled Rose’s supportive family during Brother Rice’s state run in the 2023 season. “The year that Zion was at IMG, we made it to state, and his family was there cheering us on,” McBride said. Rose’s selection as the sixth overall pick in the MLB draft generates excitement among his former supporters.

Addressing Royals fans, Rose promised to give his all. “I play my game hard,” Rose stated. “I’m going to get to the ball wherever it’s pitched and I’m going to put balls in play. I’m going to do my job out there.”
