Yankees Overcome Early Deficit to Beat White Sox 9-5

Chicago White Sox second baseman Chase Meidroth hit a line drive to the left field wall during the game against the New York Yankees. Down by one run with two outs in the seventh inning, Colson Montgomery attempted to score from first base but was thrown out at home. Yankees’ left fielder Max Schuemann made a strong throw to Anthony Volpe, who successfully tagged Montgomery at the plate.

Montgomery stated, “There were two outs, and we all trust Justin Jirschele, who I believe is one of the best third-base coaches. He reads the game really well.” Despite his confidence, the Yankees’ defense prevented him from scoring.

In the eighth inning, the Yankees added four more runs to their total, including a three-run home run by Ali Sánchez, securing a 9-5 victory over the White Sox at Rate Field. The attendance was 22,357.

Initially, the White Sox had a 3-0 lead but saw it dissipate as the game progressed. Montgomery remarked on the Yankees, saying, “They are a veteran team and really talented. We got up 3-0, but they kept the pressure on.”

Chicago White Sox pitcher Noah Schultz started the game, delivering three solid innings before facing trouble in the fourth. Schultz allowed three runs, two hits, struck out five, and had two walks in 3 1/3 innings. “He was performing well in the first three innings, but in the fourth, there was too much traffic,” manager Will Venable explained.

Venable believed Schultz showed improvement. “Maybe he gets through the fourth if I leave him in there, but he did a nice job.” Schultz acknowledged feeling fatigued later in the game, “I felt gassed in the fourth. It’s unfortunate.”

After Schultz’s exit, Jazz Chisholm Jr. tied the score with a two-run double, later scoring to give the Yankees a lead. The Sox temporarily tied it again in the fifth with another RBI single by Montgomery.

The Yankees regained the lead in the seventh. Ben Rice’s two-out RBI single against Bryan Hudson put them ahead. Montgomery was then thrown out at the plate on another relay from Volpe.

In the eighth, Sean Newcomb surrendered four runs, including Sánchez’s first major-league home run. The White Sox made three errors, impacting the game profoundly. “The defensive play was sloppy, even on plays without errors. It really was the game’s turning point,” Venable noted.

In the ninth, Volpe mishandled Montgomery’s popup, allowing a run, but David Bednar preserved the Yankees’ win by striking out Meidroth with two runners on base.

Montgomery reflected, “The Yankees are a talented team and never give up. It’s a learning experience for us as we approach the later months.”
