Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced her endorsement of Representative Haley Stevens in the race for the state’s U.S. Senate Democratic primary on Friday. Stevens, known for her centrist stance, is competing against progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. Both candidates are leading the race as early voting begins on Saturday.
Whitmer’s endorsement may strengthen Stevens’ position in Michigan, where the governor has won multiple elections by significant margins. Stevens, who transitioned a Republican-held House seat to Democratic control in 2018, is also backed by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and retiring Michigan Senator Gary Peters.
At a gathering in Detroit’s Teamsters hall, Whitmer highlighted Stevens’ capabilities, saying she possesses “what it takes to win.” She was accompanied by Stevens and South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn. Whitmer emphasized the need for strong representation in Washington, noting Stevens’ tenacious spirit.
On the other hand, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, supported by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, represents the progressive wing. Roxie Richner, El-Sayed’s spokesperson, remarked on the corporate establishment’s favored candidate, stating that “Michigan voters will get to make theirs.”
The primary is scheduled for August 4, with the victor set to challenge Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in the November election. The Democratic Party aims to gain control of the U.S. Senate by securing victories in pivotal states like Michigan.
