The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced charges against 16 individuals in multiple states, linked to illegal voting, voter registration, and related election crimes. Some cases involve noncitizens accused of voting in federal elections. The DOJ issued a warning through social media, highlighting that some charged individuals allegedly voted in the 2022 and 2024 elections. They stressed the seriousness of attempting to participate unlawfully in U.S. elections.
The individuals charged include eight noncitizens residing in Texas, with others from Idaho, Georgia, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Michigan. Allegations include noncitizens voting in federal elections, false citizenship claims, and fraudulent statements related to naturalization. The DOJ also uncovered alleged passport and identification fraud, wire fraud, and firearms-related offenses during these investigations.
This initiative is part of a broader enforcement effort begun under the Trump administration targeting illegal voting and election fraud. Monica Carzoli, a Mexican national and lawful permanent resident, confessed to voter registration and casting a vote in the November 2024 election. She was arrested in Del Rio, Texas.
In Georgia, Analiea Milliscent Eccles, a Venezuelan national and DACA recipient, faces charges for voting nine times between 2008 and 2024, claiming U.S. citizenship to vote. Avila Gomez from Idaho, also accused of false citizenship claims, registered and voted in May 2022 and November 2024. Additional charges include wire fraud and document-related offenses.
Santana Coulibaly from New Jersey, a lawful permanent resident, registered to vote in 2016 and participated in federal elections during 2018 and 2020. Her indictment includes misrepresentations in her naturalization applications. Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald mentioned that 50 noncitizens have faced charges of illegal voting under the Trump administration.
In another case, Nigerian national Gladys Adaeze Okafor faces charges for illegal voting in the 2022 elections and presumably in the 2024 general election.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin highlighted a broader investigation with over 1,620 open cases and 151 arrests. Officials are also examining more than 300,000 suspected cases. Mullin stated that illegal votes cancel out those legally cast by citizens.
The DOJ reiterated that these charges are allegations, reminding the public that defendants remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
