Vito Pickard Jr. Shines in Homewood-Flossmoor’s Victory

Junior linebacker Vito Pickard Jr. delivered a standout performance for Homewood-Flossmoor. Not only was he set on making a mark for the Vikings, but he also had a personal mission tied to coach Troy McAllister, who faced his former team, Sandburg.

“I knew this game was important for our coach because he was going up against his old school,” Pickard explained. “I told everyone on the team that I was going to set the tone and make sure we stay on point.”

Pickard followed through with a significant contribution, recording five tackles and scoring a touchdown from a fumble recovery in a decisive 35-13 win over the Eagles.

Senior quarterback Rahsaan Coleman threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver John Gadson, helping boost the Vikings’ spirit following a previous loss to Lincoln-Way East. Senior quarterback Sean Ruisz responded with a 20-yard touchdown to senior tight end Lucas Matykiewicz, leading the Eagles. Senior linebacker Cameron Wilkerson also contributed with a 19-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

“When I saw Vito score, I wanted to do the same,” Wilkerson stated. “Vito really changed the momentum. He’s very coachable, fast, and knows how to tackle. He has a high football IQ.”

Pickard’s effort was pivotal. Coach McAllister, who previously led Sandburg to three state playoff appearances, praised Pickard’s abilities.

“Vito is a wonderful football player with a lot of athletic ability,” McAllister noted. “He embraced the challenge and understood his responsibilities.”

Wearing the number 25, Pickard noted his early experience as a running back. During the game, he showcased his skills by picking up a fumbled ball and returning it 34 yards for his first career touchdown.

“My style is very fast,” Pickard said. “I saw the ball, claimed it, and scored. Coming off a loss, it was important to lead and keep the team focused.”

Pickard’s journey began in Hammond, Indiana, during his freshman year. Transitioning to a new team and state, he aligned his growth with McAllister’s arrival. Now, in his second year as a starter, he feels more at home.

His versatility shines; he’s a 6-foot, 190-pound player with attributes suited to a safety. His speed and agility allow him to chase quarterbacks and cover receivers effectively.

“I love the atmosphere here,” Pickard said. “The band, the audience, and creating havoc on the field – I enjoy every moment.”

Normally quiet, Pickard transforms on the field, leading vocally and driving motivation.

“People say I’m quiet, but on the field, I’m different,” he shared. “Friday night showed that I can uplift the team and encourage everyone to perform better.”
