Vita Vea Requests Trade from Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers nose tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade just as training camp is set to begin. This move follows frustrations over contract negotiations, according to a league source confirmed to Fox News Digital. Vea’s current contract extends until 2026, with potential earnings of up to $18 million if he plays all games in his contract’s final year.

Vea is not easily replaceable. He is a key player in Tampa Bay’s defense, known for his ability to stop the run. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 347 pounds, Vea has been effective against double-teams and has been an integral part of a defense that has been among the league’s best against the run since 2019.

Tampa Bay’s run defense ranked first in the league, allowing only 94.1 rushing yards per game from 2019 to 2024. They also led in yards allowed per carry at 4.0.

Despite injury setbacks in 2020, Vea has shown durability. He achieved a career-high of seven sacks in 2024 and continued his success in 2025 with 4.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, and 13 quarterback hits. His performance has contributed to significant defensive achievements, including a standout season in 2024 alongside Calijah Kancey.

The trade request complicates matters for the Buccaneers, who are also negotiating a high-profile contract with quarterback Baker Mayfield. Vea’s situation could result in a “hold-in” scenario where he attends camp but does not participate, which is undesirable for the team.

Vea has played a pivotal role in Tampa Bay’s success, including their Super Bowl LV victory. His contributions have been recognized with two Pro Bowl selections and inclusion in the NFL Players Association’s Top 100 list entering 2025.
