Virginia Attorney General Faces Criticism Over Immigration Policy Disputes

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones is under scrutiny due to conflicts with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement measures. The disagreements involve a civil rights inquiry into traffic-stop protocols of a rural sheriff who collaborates with ICE and a legal battle regarding federal access to commercial driver records.

Virginia House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore expressed his perspective through Fox News Digital, indicating the disputes reflect a broader reluctance among Virginia’s Democratic leadership to work with former President Donald Trump. His remarks followed Jones’s announcement of an investigation into Greene County Sheriff Steve Smith’s actions.

“That’s just this administration’s way of operating,” Kilgore stated, emphasizing that the Democrats in Virginia seem unwilling to cooperate with Trump, potentially endangering Virginians.

The Office of Civil Rights led by Jones alerted Smith to the initiation of an investigation into the Greene County Sheriff’s Office traffic-stop procedures and their cooperation with federal immigration entities.

Kilgore commended the Greene County sheriff for collaborating with ICE to prevent illegal activities. He criticized Jones, the state’s chief law enforcement official, for opposing local sheriffs regarding undocumented immigrants.

Attorney General Jones launched the civil rights probe due to claims that the Greene County Sheriff’s Office might be conducting traffic stops that breach state law and the Constitution. The inquiry demanded documents related to immigration enforcement policies and interagency agreements.

Smith’s deputies participated in operations with ICE, leading to significant detentions. An operation in June resulted in 49 detentions by ICE at a critical traffic junction. Another incident in May saw the arrest of 26 individuals, including an identified gang member.

Kilgore questioned the message sent to Virginia’s residents when officials prioritize undocumented migrants over citizens’ safety. Sheriff Smith defended his operations and indicated his commitment to cooperating with federal agencies post-legal review.

The state senator expressed disappointment over the situation, while political figures cited Jones’s past controversial statements. Former Del. Kim Taylor criticized Jones, labeling his actions as hypocritical based on earlier incidents. Additionally, Jones’s legal challenge involving commercial-driver records, aimed at protecting driver privacy against federal demands, garnered attention and resulted in a temporary court victory.

An ICE spokesperson confirmed the operations and remarked on the necessity of local law enforcement partnerships. They emphasized that political barriers force federal entities to take more visible actions to capture released criminals.

Kilgore reiterated criticism of the lawsuit as another attempt by Democrats against the administration’s actions aimed at ensuring road safety. He questioned the opposition to measures securing highways.
