The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has begun its ambitious cosmic survey from a Chilean mountain. This project aims to capture detailed images of the universe for the next decade. Each night, the telescope will produce hundreds of images by focusing on the southern sky. This initiative promises to illuminate previously unseen corners of the cosmos.
Researchers anticipate that these observations will enhance the current understanding of the universe. The aim is to map billions of stars within the Milky Way and numerous galaxies beyond it. By capturing swift and repeated images of the same sky regions, scientists hope to discover faint objects that were previously undetectable.
“We’re going to see large numbers of scientists across the world working with this data set, studying the universe in a way that they haven’t been able to before,” stated Phil Marshall, the observatory’s deputy director of operations.
The observatory released its inaugural images last year, showcasing the Trifid and Lagoon nebulas located thousands of light-years away. A light-year measures nearly 6 trillion miles, equivalent to 9.7 trillion kilometers. Continuous equipment enhancements have prepared the observatory for the survey, ensuring it meets the required depth and accuracy.
Pictures from the observatory may provide insights into galaxy formation and clustering over billions of years, contributing to the understanding of the universe’s origins. The observatory is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. It honors astronomer Vera Rubin, who first proposed the existence of dark matter.
Researchers also hope the survey will uncover information about dark matter and dark energy, two enigmatic forces shaping the universe.
