Valparaiso Pitcher Lucas Haas Heads to Cincinnati

Lucas Haas, a standout pitcher from Valparaiso, caught the eye of college baseball teams last summer with his exceptional skills. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 195 pounds, Haas boasts a 91 mph fastball renowned for its impressive spin rate. He gained significant attention after participating in the Future Games before the recruiting window opened. “When it opened Aug. 1, it was very hectic, and I had a bunch of schools calling me,” Haas said, describing the recruiting frenzy.

Haas, who posted a 6-2 record with a 2.58 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 46 innings during his junior year, attracted interest from notable programs like Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue. However, Cincinnati emerged as Haas’s top choice. “I felt like I narrowed it down to Cincinnati after that first visit,” he explained. On July 8, Haas committed to the Bearcats, impressed by their back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances under coach Jordan Bischel. “I felt the coaches would develop me,” Haas added, confident in the opportunity to make an impact as a freshman.

Valparaiso coach Todd Evans expressed his belief in Haas’s potential to achieve even higher goals. “I think he wants to be an all-state type pitcher,” Evans remarked. “He obviously has some individual goals, and if he achieves those, he’s going to bring the whole team with him.” The high praise from Evans reinforces Haas’s reputation as a competitive and determined player.

Haas credits his competitiveness and work ethic as his greatest strengths. “I’m definitely a hard worker,” he noted. “If there’s someone in front of me, know that I’m willing to outwork them.” He aims to make a lasting impact in Cincinnati. “If you have that mindset of being competitive and strong, you can get anywhere in life,” Haas stated confidently.

Ryan Haas, Lucas’s father, emphasized the importance of maintaining focus. “Don’t take your foot off the gas,” he advised. “Just because you committed, that doesn’t mean anything. He’s still got a lot to prove.” Lucas Haas plans to embrace his final year with Valparaiso’s team, hoping for another state run while enjoying his senior season with friends.

Looking ahead to Cincinnati, Haas expresses excitement about connecting with his new team and coaches. “I’m definitely excited to meet the team and the coaches and make better connections with everyone,” he shared.
