An unidentified object exploded in Polish territory following a sequence of long-range assaults by Russia targeting Ukraine. Polish authorities reported the object’s crash near Tarnawa-Kolonia, a village in Lublin province.
Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, stated that this incident took place during a missile attack by Russia on western Ukraine, indicating a breach of Polish airspace. It remains uncertain whether the object was a Russian missile.
The Polish army noted that its air defenses tracked at least a dozen missiles passing over western Ukraine, close to Polish airspace, overnight Wednesday. Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense declared it executed strikes employing “long-range precision weapons from land, air, and sea,” in addition to attack drones targeting various military sites across Ukraine.
As a NATO member, Poland is protected under the alliance’s Article 5 clause, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. Throughout the conflict in Ukraine, Russian drones and missiles have previously violated NATO territory. The current incident presents a challenge for the alliance’s commitment to collective defense.
