Ulysses Morales Balances Soccer and Football

Oak Forest’s Ulysses Morales has discovered a future in football, something he hadn’t anticipated, yet his enthusiasm for soccer remains strong. As a senior midfielder, Morales began kicking for the Bengals during his sophomore year. In June, he committed to playing football at Illinois while contemplating leaving soccer. However, he ultimately decided that maintaining a hectic schedule was worthwhile.

“The football coaches are the ones who actually told me I should play,” Morales explained. “My soccer coaches just gave me the support and told me they’d support my decision either way. I’m grateful for choosing soccer. It’s my final year, playing with friends, and enjoying the game I’ve loved since childhood, even as I transition to football.

That decision results in busy weekends.

Morales participated in Oak Forest football’s 38-0 triumph over Stagg last Friday night. The following day, he returned to the soccer field, aiding the Bengals in defeating Mount Carmel 1-0 in a Windy City Ram Classic consolation game.

“I’ve been involved in both sports since sophomore year, but this is the first year I’ve genuinely concentrated on football, making it the most challenging year,” he noted. “My legs are still adjusting. I visit the trainer more frequently—before, during, and after games. Recovery efforts have intensified, yet Morales believes it is worthwhile.

Morales’ journey in football has been unpredictable. He hadn’t tried kicking until his sophomore year. Initially, he doubted whether it was a pursuit worth engaging with.

“After sophomore year, I wasn’t sure if continuing was worth the effort, time, and cost,” Morales admitted. He credits his kicking coach, Chris Nendick, for instilling confidence and refining his form.

His on-field achievements included five field goals last season for Oak Forest and consistently powerful kickoffs. His future began to solidify in the offseason when college coaches recognized his potential at camps.

“In January, Purdue was the first school to express interest,” Morales recounted. From shock to excitement, the process rolled into March with his first offer from Arkansas State. He accepted Illinois’ offer in June, overjoyed by the opportunity and grateful to share that moment with his family.

Morales asserts that his greatest improvements have been mental.

“During sophomore year, self-doubt plagued me,” Morales reflected. Now confident, he wants to embrace crucial game moments.

On the soccer field, Morales earned the trust of Oak Forest coach Alex Alvarez. While football occupies a priority spot due to its long-term potential, Morales’ passion for soccer persists.

Coach Alvarez said, “We know he loves soccer, and we’re flexible if he can’t always be present. He’s great for the team. While not a captain, he remains a leader.”
