Ukrainian Player Kate Koval Leaves LSU Over Signing of Russian Player

Ukrainian basketball forward Kate Koval has announced her departure from LSU’s women’s basketball program. The decision came after the team signed a Russian player, which she revealed on social media.

Koval expressed the personal impact the decision had on her and her family, saying, “The timing of this situation and the deeply personal effect it has had on me, my family and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me.” She emphasized the difficulty of her decision by stating, “This decision has not been easy. While I understand and respect that roster decisions are a part of college basketball, I have to remain true to myself, my values and my country.”

LSU’s coach Kim Mulkey previously mentioned Koval’s departure as stemming from “personal reasons” after her first season. Speculation has arisen that Koval’s decision was influenced by the signing of 6-foot-5 Russian center Anna Minaeva, who has a professional background with MBA Moscow.

Koval’s sentiments were strong as she shared pride in her father’s participation in Ukraine’s military. “My father serves in the Ukrainian military and takes tremendous pride in defending his country against Russian aggression,” Koval wrote. She underscored the war’s direct impact on her life by adding, “For me, this war is not distant or abstract. People close to me have been killed and wounded in Russian attacks, and places where I grew up and first began playing basketball have been destroyed by missile strikes.”

While Koval enjoyed her time in Baton Rouge, she found the inclusion of the Russian player a point of contention. She remarked on not being informed of Minaeva’s addition until after the transfer portal closed, potentially impacting her eligibility for the 2026-27 season without NCAA intervention.

Koval has expressed hope for the NCAA’s understanding of her situation and the opportunity to compete at another institution in the upcoming basketball season. Representatives from LSU and the NCAA have yet to comment.

Koval previously played for Notre Dame before moving to LSU. During her time there, she played in 35 games with 17 as a starter, averaging 8.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game. Her time with LSU ended with a Sweet 16 upset against Duke.
