Ukrainian Drone Attack Hits St. Petersburg Oil Terminal

A Ukrainian drone strike targeted an oil terminal in St. Petersburg on Saturday, according to Russian officials. This attack is part of Ukraine’s ongoing strategy to dismantle Russia’s oil infrastructure through regular long-range assaults. These strikes have led to a fuel crisis and are increasing political stress on the Kremlin as the conflict with Ukraine continues into its fifth year.

Details of the Attack

Governor Alexander Beglov reported that the Kirovsky district on the Baltic Sea was affected. He also stated that air defenses intercepted 72 Ukrainian drones across St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, and its surrounding areas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack a part of Ukraine’s ‘long-range sanctions’ against Russia, highlighting that Ukrainian forces also struck a military target on Kronstadt island near St. Petersburg.

“The Ukrainian defense forces hit the port oil infrastructure, which earns money for the Russian war, and there were also hits on Kronstadt — an important military target,” he said in a post on Telegram.

The same district in St. Petersburg faced a similar attack in June, prior to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Impact on Russian and Ukrainian Territories

The Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014, has especially felt the impact of these strikes, resulting in local authorities suspending gasoline sales to civilians. On Saturday, a Ukrainian attack reportedly resulted in one death and two injuries, including a 10-year-old child, according to Moscow-appointed Governor Sergei Aksyonov.

Reactions and Counterclaims

In response to these attacks, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Ukraine’s strikes on energy facilities as insignificant and vowed to proceed with his military objectives. During a recent visit to the military headquarters, he received briefings on the capture of Kostyantynivka, labeling it as a significant step. Kostyantynivka is noted as a crucial transportation and industrial center.

Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoy stated that Ukrainian forces had been pushed back and fighting was active near Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka. In contrast, Zelenskyy refuted these claims, describing them as misinformation by Russia.

Zelenskyy further commented directly to U.S. President Donald Trump, criticizing Putin’s statements, which he claims misrepresent the reality of the conflict.

Strikes on Ukraine

A Russian attack recently targeted residential areas in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, wounding eight individuals, including children. Additionally, repeated Ukrainian drone strikes on the border city of Belgorod have left it mostly without power, disrupting the daily lives of many Russians.

These events bring the conflict closer to Russia’s citizens, challenging Putin’s narrative that ordinary Russians are unaffected by the ongoing war.
