The current World Cup has generated excitement among U.S. soccer enthusiasts, according to a new survey by Ipsos Sports for the Associated Press. While interest is growing, a majority of Americans remain largely disengaged from soccer. Despite this, enthusiasm surrounds the U.S. men’s national team advancing to the knockout stage.
U.S. Team Performance
Most U.S. soccer fans are thrilled with the team’s progress. Around 60% described themselves as ‘extremely’ or ‘very’ excited about reaching the knockout rounds, compared to 25% of all Americans. Prior to their match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, fans had confidence in the team, noting a strong group stage performance. Around 55% felt the team’s performance went ‘extremely well’ or ‘very well’.
Impact of Co-Hosting
Co-hosting the World Cup has been viewed positively, with half of U.S. soccer fans rating the role as going at least ‘very well’. On the contrary, one-third of fans believe FIFA’s efforts in managing the event are as successful. Criticisms have emerged over issues such as hydration breaks and travel restrictions affecting Iran. Opinions on FIFA remain split, with only 20% of U.S. adults expressing a positive view.
Growing Soccer Interest
The survey highlights challenges in shifting U.S. interest towards soccer. A mere 20% of Americans consider themselves fans of international or U.S. soccer. Approximately one-third have heard ‘a lot’ about the World Cup. Only 17% express being ‘extremely’ or ‘very’ excited about the tournament, slightly rising from May’s polls.
Still, many Americans anticipate an increase in overall soccer interest due to the World Cup, although fewer acknowledge personal growth in interest. About 60% believe others will become more enthusiastic, while 24% have felt a personal increase.
Modes of Engagement
Apart from game-watching, other methods exist for engaging with the World Cup. About 40% of adults, including half of soccer fans, have used social media to follow updates. Approximately 25% have attended or plan to attend a restaurant or bar to watch games, while 20% have joined a watch party.
Moreover, around 33% of fans have purchased official merchandise. Betting on the games has also been significant; about 10% of respondents have wagered, with 5% trading on prediction markets. Additionally, 8% have viewed a game in host cities, further connecting fans to the event.
The Ipsos Sports survey, conducted between June 26-28 with a sample of 1,027 adults, features a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 points.
