U.S. Envoys Pursue Peace Talks in Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

In Kyiv, U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in talks this Sunday aimed at ending Russia’s longstanding invasion of Ukraine. This marks their initial official visit to Ukraine. Their trip follows a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, as tensions have intensified through increased aerial assaults.

The effort by the U.S. to broker peace has faced challenges, partly due to the Trump administration’s prior focus on conflict with Iran. The use of jet-powered drones by Russia has become commonplace, often triggering air-raid sirens in Kyiv. Meanwhile, progress along the extensive front line has been limited.

After discussions with the American representatives, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the goal of achieving a “just, fair peace.” He expressed gratitude towards the U.S. envoys for their visit via train. He noted the participation of security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany in later discussions.

“We’ve had very meaningful discussion, substantive, important, and we’re very encouraged,” Witkoff stated.

Kushner emphasized President Donald Trump’s interest in establishing conditions for lasting peace. A senior Ukrainian official disclosed that the talks also examined strategies for enduring the upcoming winter months.

No Major Breakthroughs

Saturday’s meeting in Moscow lasted over three hours without significant progress. Putin’s adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the talks as constructive but did not provide specific details. Discussions in Moscow also included potential economic projects beneficial to both countries.

Previously, Witkoff and Kushner visited Moscow in January for discussions with Putin.

Continued Hostilities

Despite an agreement between Putin and Zelenskyy to pause strikes on capitals during the talks, cross-border attacks persisted. Overnight, Russian strikes resulted in casualties in various Ukrainian regions. Drone and missile defense systems intercepted several attacks, indicating ongoing conflict.

In Russia, Ukrainian drone strikes resulted in casualties as well, demonstrating the continued exchange of fire between the two countries.

On Sunday, Ukrainians held a moment of silence for fallen soldiers. Nataliia Lipei participated, hoping that recent dialogues would end the violence. However, skepticism remains among others, such as Oleksandr Pastukhov, who doubts the impact of the envoys’ visit.

Pope Leo XIV expressed his hope for successful negotiations during his Sunday prayer, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy for peace.
