U.S. Coast Guard Seizes Over 500 Pounds of Cocaine from Barge Off Puerto Rico

Significant Drug Bust by U.S. Coast Guard

Authorities apprehended a stowaway with over 500 pounds of cocaine and a firearm on a barge off the coast of Puerto Rico. The U.S. Coast Guard reported this incident as the second major drug seizure in the same harbor this year.

Joint Operation in San Juan Harbor

On Tuesday, crew members from two Coast Guard Cutters worked with a Homeland Security task force to conduct a joint operation on the Crimson Clover barge in San Juan Harbor. Officials revealed that the operation led to the capture of the stowaway, who possessed nine bales of cocaine amounting to approximately 237.75 kilograms, or around 524 pounds.

Custody and Valuation

Following the seizure, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Isaac Mayo cooperated with law enforcement at Coast Guard Base San Juan. They took custody of the suspect, along with the weapon and cocaine. The narcotics hold a street value estimated at $4.8 million. The identity of the suspect remains undisclosed.

Deterrence Against Smuggling

The Coast Guard released images of the seized materials and officers transporting the bales to shore. Lt. Cmdr. Ross Markham emphasized the importance of experience and resources in achieving this safe and successful operation, aiming to deter smuggling organizations from exploiting commercial vessels for trafficking activities.

Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Trafficking

This arrest aligns with enhanced efforts by U.S. authorities to combat drug trafficking and human smuggling in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean. The administration has been actively engaging in military strikes on alleged drug-running operations, leading to the deaths of over 200 individuals.

Previous Seizures

Earlier in the year, another stowaway was apprehended in a Puerto Rican harbor with 789 pounds of cocaine. The Coast Guard recovered this suspect from the water, along with 10 bales wrapped in brown bags. Additionally, $12 million worth of cocaine was seized from a boat off the island’s north coast a month later.
