A prominent endorsement from former President Donald Trump significantly aided a lesser-known candidate in South Carolina’s latest runoff election. Senator Darline Graham, a Republican, won against Representative Ralph Norman in a race to succeed her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, as the GOP nominee for the Senate. Lindsey Graham’s unexpected death in July created an opportunity for his sister, despite her limited political experience.

Darline Graham received her initial appointment from South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. Yet, her role was seen as temporary, primarily to complete the five months left in her brother’s term. Trump, however, urged her to maintain the position, expressing his long-standing acquaintance with her and emphasizing her respect among colleagues.

“Darline, you’ve got to do it,” Trump stated at a recent rally. “Everyone loves her. Everyone respects her,” he emphasized, recounting his familiarity with her through Lindsey Graham and highlighting her close relationship with her brother.

During her campaign, Graham faced challenges, including an admission during a debate about her limited understanding of Taiwan’s strategic significance. Trump responded by providing financial support as her campaign approached a critical phase, with his PAC delivering substantial funds to bolster her efforts.

Despite differing from her brother’s political focus, Darline Graham underscored her alignment with Trump’s policies. Her campaign emphasized domestic issues while maintaining strong support for the Trump agenda, which appealed to voters. She criticized Norman for his opposition to GOP leadership, suggesting the need for party unity.

Graham’s brief tenure in the Senate saw her highlighting accomplishments such as the approval of a bipartisan sanctions package targeting Russia and Iran, as well as supporting Trump’s nomination for attorney general. She contrasted her swift actions against Norman’s lengthy political career, asserting her impact within a short timeframe.
