President Donald Trump demonstrated his influential role in Republican primaries during the Michigan GOP gubernatorial race. Republican Rep. John James, a seasoned U.S. Senate nominee, won the GOP primary, backed by Trump’s support. James defeated multimillionaire businessman Perry Johnson, as reported by the Associated Press.
James, a West Point graduate and former Army Ranger, has an impressive history, serving combat tours as an Apache helicopter pilot during the Iraq War. In the upcoming general election, he will compete against Democratic nominee and two-term Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
The GOP primary contest between James and Johnson was intense. Johnson, a previous gubernatorial and presidential candidate, controversially labeled James as a “DEI candidate.” Johnson also accused James of “playing the race card” in a debate. James countered by labeling Johnson as “desperate.” Despite Johnson’s significant financial investment in his campaign, James resonated with voters who valued leadership and commitment.
Notably, former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox and state Senate Republican leader Aric Nesbitt were also part of the nomination race, though they suspended their campaigns. Their names remained on the ballot.
Trump’s endorsement provided substantial momentum to James, culminating in a significant rally in Michigan. The president’s endorsement power has proven effective in several GOP primaries across states like Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, and Louisiana.
However, Trump’s endorsement failed to secure victory for Rep. Randy Feenstra in Iowa, with Zach Lahn winning the race. Despite this, Trump-backed candidates have generally been successful, evident in primary elections in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and Louisiana.
In Arizona, Trump-endorsed Rep. Andy Biggs won the gubernatorial primary decisively. Trump’s support has consistently aided candidates in securing nominations, showcasing his enduring influence in Republican primaries.
