President Donald Trump made bold assertions regarding China’s efforts to obtain American voter data during a speech on Thursday evening. He described this alleged activity as an unprecedented scandal.

While the collection of voter data by China has been widely recognized for quite some time, the data itself is often publicly available for download and can also be purchased. Despite the insights such data might offer into U.S. voters, it does not provide the means to alter election outcomes.

Trump claimed that China orchestrated the “largest compromise of election data in history,” beginning with the 2020 election cycle. He indicated that over several years, 220 million voter files were unlawfully collected. However, specific details about how he calculated those numbers remain unclear. These files could consist of basic information such as names, addresses, and phone numbers. According to heavily redacted documents, a table outlines the volume of acquired records, including approximately 204 million records from 2016.

China has previously hacked more sensitive data, like government staff records, rendering voter files less critical in comparison.

The President’s claim was among a series of statements that appeared exaggerated or disconnected from reality. His administration released hundreds of documents offering more conservative and careful evaluations regarding China and other election security issues.
