Trump’s Air Force One Donation Faces Upgrades Amid Security Concerns

President Donald Trump announced that the new Air Force One plane gifted by Qatar will undergo upgrades, addressing concerns about its security features. On returning from the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, Trump was asked if the plane lacked missile-defense capabilities. He stated, “It has a lot of capability,” mentioning that upgrades will “max out” its potential. The process is expected to take about a month, although the specific upgrades remain unclear.

This month, headlines focused on Trump flying back from a NATO summit in Turkey using a different presidential aircraft. Speculation arose about the readiness of the Qatari-donated jet, which the administration opted not to use. Despite denying security concerns, Trump acknowledged that presidential life carries risks, noting, “I’m No. 1 on the kill list for Iran.”

NBC News revealed that the Secret Service advised Trump to take the older plane from Turkey due to its proximity to the Middle East, following renewed hostilities with Iran. Additionally, the Justice Department subpoenaed four New York Times journalists over stories about security concerns regarding the new Air Force One.

The luxurious Boeing 747-8 jet was gifted by Qatar’s royal family in 2025 as Trump’s new Air Force One. In June, Trump presented the jet at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, highlighting its red, white, and dark-blue color scheme. He described it as a “flying White House at a level of luxury no one has ever seen before.” He used it for a trip to North Dakota on July 1 to attend a museum event honoring Theodore Roosevelt.

This aircraft serves as a temporary replacement while Boeing works on delivering next-generation Air Force One planes, expected by 2028.
